What is Sex and the State?

Sex and the State is a newsletter written by me, Cathy Reisenwitz. It employs social science and first-person perspective to explore gender and related issues with a non-partisan, cross-ideological bent. It has 5500+ free subscribers and 240+ paid subscribers.

Who are you?

Growing up in North Alabama, I went to church three times a week and mostly only talked to Republicans. Then I got divorced, moved to D.C., and became a sex worker. My writing on sex, gender, tech, and politics has appeared in the Daily Beast, VICE Motherboard, Reason magazine, Liberal Currents, and other fine publications.

Praise for Sex and the State

“Some of the most original and thought-provoking commentary being written today.” -Steve Chapman

“I love your voice. I love the personal topics you write about. I love how brave you are in writing, how thoughtful, how open to intellectual growth you are. You have both ferocity and compassion. And you're fucking smart.” -reader survey response

“She’s intelligent but also thoughtful and deeply introspective, a combination that happens too rarely by itself.” Erik Sherman in Forbes

Give me money

In addition to my politics and culture writing, I have more than a decade of experience writing marketing content for brands. Despite this, I’ve had a hell of a time finding a product or service that’s an obvious fit to sponsor a newsletter that offers a sex-positive feminist analysis of news and current events while extolling the myriad benefits of gender abolition.

I also face the disadvantage of failing to fall neatly into the left- or right-wing echo chamber.
