Slow boring published a piece this week about DC gun crime. Says that lots of cops make arrests for gun possession, but the defensr lawyers are so well paid and motivated, and the laws and juries are so in favor of people with guns, that few arrests become convictions.
He concluded by saying the local govt should collaborate with the cops and juries to align their interests, so they waste less time on arrests that are unlikely to become convictions.
All in favor of tackling the big crimes and everyone agreeing on what to prosecute, not just arrest.
Meanwhile here in deep blue Arlington VA we have had some debate over local DA who ran on reducing prosecutions for non violent crimes. Whereas some of my neighbors complained to me about middle level violent crime being ignored.
Whether in a survey or a feedback app, community Inpuy linked to metrics sounds good. Now just need to figure out what the cops are willing to track and public. Paperwork ;)
I’m loving this series and it’s prompted me to explore local police policy statements
I'm so glad to hear it and would love to know what you discover!
