"I started a conversation with one of my favorite exes when I met him at the Birmingham for Ron Paul 2012 meetup by complimenting his Mt Rushmore but it’s Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman, Fredrick Hayek, and Ludwig Von Mises tee shirt."

in addition to Maya Angelou’s observation, and the suggestion to ask for a favor - borrow a book, recommend a movie, share a contact/website/handyman’s name (which I believe was Ben Franklin’s technique) I have found volunteering (usher at a community theatre, recreational sports, planned parenthood, big brother/sister) to be a very good way of taking that first step to meeting people.

If you want to meet interesting people, be interesting.

Join a political cause you believe in. Serve on the Board of a non-profit. Learn a foreign language and practice with native speakers. Cook food with Food Not Bombs. Learn to dance. Go to an underground rave. Take drugs. Hookup with a stranger. Go to a sex party. Explore your bisexuality. Get arrested for a cause. Learn how to play a musical instrument and join a band. Play at a bar. Learn to sing and join the church choir. Jump out of an airplane. Get lost in the wilderness.

Show up. Show up for life. And in case you are wondering, I have done all of the above at one point or another in my life.
