From this description it seems like Hawley is trying to be Jordan Peterson - cobbling together a movement of reactionary men off a mixture of self-help platitudes and especially stupid culture war bullshit. But like if you were already helped by Jordan Peterson (dubious), why would you need this book?
It suddenly occurs to me the main market for this book is old people buying it as unwanted presents for their young adult sons. “Connor THINKS he likes Bernie Sanders, but wait until he reads THIS!” What a depressing thought.
Great analogy! And the olds buying it for the youngs had never occurred to me, but it makes perfect sense. Especially since I'm sure that's a lot of his donors.
That reminds me of years ago when Evangelical Christians were forcing copies of the “Left Behind” books on people. They thought that a poorly written pulp novel version of the End Times would frighten the ungodly into converting.
Being the recipient of the book didn’t frighten me into loving Jesus more. It just made me wonder about evangelicals’ poor taste in literature.
Not so much small-government as "all problems can be overcome by personal virtue and you're having trouble you just need to be more virtuous, forget about what government is doing except joining in my crusades"
I think the criticism of being too elite, too privileged and too rich to talk about a subject only goes so far. Lots of writers write about subjects they would seem not to have enough personal experiences with but which they have developed views about. Since he is gay and was brought up evangelical, he has probably struggled with traditional notions of masculinity. Like a lot of writers, maybe he is trying to help himself. Also, the reactionary men’s rights movement seems to be having a moment, thanks to people like Jordan Peterson (also someone who writes about things he is unqualified to write about, e.g. feminism).
I don't mean to say anyone is too elite, too privileged and too rich to talk about any subject. I mean, I'm a woman who talks extensively about men's issues. I more mean that he's never, to my knowledge, acknowledged his elite, rich, privileged upbringing or how it might influence his perspective. If anything, he seems to want to obscure it. But mostly I mean he should use his privilege to actually help people rather than telling them what they should be doing differently and blaming "the left."
Josh Hawley is gay? He's married to a woman and I've never heard that about him.
This is so good. the podcast “know your enemy” did the same book review and its remarkable how both of you had the same things to say. You have more empathy then they did even though the one of the hosts on Know your enemy grew up in the Same will social economic circles a Josh. I prefer your take it seems down to earth and accessible...
The host grew up in a very strict evangelical family also but was rich and went to those elite schools, he is gay, and...long story he is not conservative or religious anymore. They notice biblical things, they get carried away with cerebral philosophical arguments sometimes so it’s hard to always follow the dry jokes. they have an inside view of how the sausage is made high up that is valuable. Love all you’re stuff
But I'd Hawley actually made life better for men, how would he be able to use their rage to manipulate them?
Good, but depressing point. Grrr.
“In his book, he advises men to make sure their life matters. I wish, in sum, that Josh Hawley would take his own advice.”

😂😂😂
Outstanding. Hawley's preening self-righteousness drives me crazy.
Yesss! It's extremely grating. I mean, at least he's taking advantage of some of what many people turn to religion for.
Not so much small-government as "all problems can be overcome by personal virtue and you're having trouble you just need to be more virtuous, forget about what government is doing except joining in my crusades"
He's not even small-govt! He's for theocracy, for protectionism, for social welfare spending.
Performative masculinity and performative patriotism wrapped up in a tortilla made of performative christianity.
The perfect thing for the do as I say politician.
Worse. Burrito. Ever.

Thank you! Sounds like a good podcast, I'll check it out.
I grew up poor, but Evangelical. So I don't empathize from a class perspective, but I do from a religious perspective.
