It’s fitting that the hands-down craziest man – literally involuntarily committed and diagnosed with mental illness – I ever dated, and that’s saying something, put me onto the David Foster Wallace This is Water commencement speech.
Many would say it’s unwise to take life advice from crazy people. Wallace himself stalked and abused his ex and then killed himself.
But I disagree. I don’t listen to people who are naturally good at things tell me how to do them. How would they know?
A depressive writer who is not good at letting things go is exactly the kind of person who can tell me how to have a better life. And, with that speech, he really did.
