To celebrate this year’s pride, LEGO released a Pride set, called “Everyone is Awesome,” featuring 11 monochromatic, non-gendered figurines that come together to form a rainbow with black and brown stripes and the transgender flag colors.
On Friday, Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, published a 2300-word essay condemning LEGO for giving in to “moral revolutionaries” who have “based their entire argument upon an idea of personal identity in which sexuality is the most important thing about you.”
As a reminder, pride is a celebration of a riot by gay and trans people who just wanted to eat at a restaurant in peace.
It is in fact Evangelicals who make sexuality the most important thing about a person. The Bible is as condemning of overeating as it is gay sex. Yet how many people have been kicked out of their churches for overeating? How many pastors have written 2300-word rants about the moral revolutionaries at the all-you-can-eat buffet? There’s nothing morally wrong with gay sex or overeating. I’m just pointing out the rank hypocrisy.
It’s also a super weird morality that says gay sex is sinful but slave owning is fine.
Why does this matter? Because Evangelicals punch way above their weight in terms of power. They are way overrepresented in government relative to their proportion of the population.
They’re behind the human trafficking moral panic. Just this week NBC reported the Harris County Precinct’s Human Trafficking Unit handpicked female deputies for undercover operations because they were “young, attractive and Latina” and fit the personal taste of a commanding officer. The male cops then sexually abused these female cops. In other words, treated them like they treat “human trafficking victims” they’re supposedly “rescuing.”
Evangelicals control what we watch. They even influence the way sex researchers frame their studies. They control what girls wear.
They’re behind the trans panic.
In 1956 Caroline County judge Leon M. Bazile said: “Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
He then denied the Lovings’ appeal. Amazingly, 50 years after the US legalized interracial marriage many Evangelicals still oppose interracial marriage.
Evangelicals should have absolutely zero credibility on morality. And yet they still control so much of American life.
Double Dang... I love how you hit it head-on. I am glad I had some women to bring me into understanding how hang-ups keep people from being complete people. Suppressed human nature is so dangerous. I personally think a lot of Evangelicals use religion as a way to meet their control needs and it's their drug of choice. I believe Evangelical leadership is about power and control, and their followers are being indoctrinated at all phases of their life, and if they don't fall in line then it's "Off to Hell with you"! Unfortunately, they are well organized.
