I just read The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church. It has been difficult. I kept going back and forth between it and Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens (10/10) to get a break.
Not to be dramatic, but absolutely to be only slightly hyperbolic, growing up in Evangelical Christianity was child abuse and reading about the Evangelical Christian church meant reliving my trauma. I grew up in Southern Baptist churches. Considering how rampant child sexual abuse was and is in the Southern Baptist Convention, I was extremely lucky. But “wasn’t raped” doesn’t mean “unscathed.”
