In 2023 Evangelical Christians released a fundraising propaganda film called The Sound of Freedom, which was supposedly based on the true story of a guy who claimed to run vigilante rescue missions of children abducted by strangers and sold into sex trafficking. I saw it as a favor to a family member, and then immediate called bullshit.

As predicted, the guy is a huge liar and moral panic profiteer. Around October, several survivors of his alleged sexual assault have filed suit against him.

This month, Alabama’s Governor signed “The Sound of Freedom” bill into law.

At the national level, two US states elected Qanon conspiracy theorists to the House.

I think it’s very directly related to the urban/rural divide.
