asked whether I was saying that authoritarianism is a mental illness.I have, as you might expect, a few thoughts on this.
First, what is a mental illness?
A brain isn’t like a liver. A liver has, basically, one job.
It’s pretty straightforward to determine how well a liver is doing its thang.
A brain, on the other hand, has lots and lots of jobs and lots of ways to get those jobs done. This often makes determining whether and to what extent a brain is “functioning” “correctly” a much more ambiguous question.
